How do you remove algae from fishtank ornaments?

I take them out, place them outside in sunlight for a day or 2 and the algae dries and dies. Then put the ornament back in and my guppies devour the dried algae. Soon its good as new. If not use a toothbrush but keep it specifically for aquarium use so it doesn't get used with cleaning products by mistake.
