How are polygenic traits different from traits that only require 2 alleles?

Alleles are different versions of just one gene. A characteristic that is polygenic is the sum of many genes. Each gene in the polygenic trait then has its own alleles. This is why ual reproduction is a powerful way of mixing genetic traits. The combinations of alleles in a single polygenic trait are constantly mixed.
