What happens to genes when chromosomes are doubled before mitosis?

Most gene expression is shut down during G2 (post S phase but before mitosis). This prevents damage due to the functional polyploidy when there are two extra copies of each gene. During mitosis, all gene expression is shut down due to the dense packaging of chromosomes for mitosis. Gene expression begins again in G1 phase.
